Part 2: Three Cries in the Silence
The operating room doors burst open.
“Blood pressure is dropping.”
“Heart rate 140.”
“Anesthesia ready.”
Bright surgical lights flooded Emma’s face as the team surrounded her.
Dr. Daniel Morgan looked at every member of the operating room.
“Everyone knows the plan. Mother first. Babies second. We bring all four home.”
A chorus of determined voices answered.
“Yes, Doctor.”
Emma could barely keep her eyes open.
The medication was beginning to work.
She searched the faces around her.
None of them were Ethan’s.
“I… love them…” she murmured.
“You can tell them yourself,” Nurse Olivia said, squeezing her hand one last time before stepping back.
“We’re going to make sure of it.”
The anesthesiologist gently placed the oxygen mask over Emma’s face.
“Count backward from ten.”
“Ten…”
“Nine…”
Her voice faded.
The room fell silent except for the steady rhythm of machines.
“Begin.”
Outside the operating room…
Nurse Olivia stood near the nurses’ station with Emma’s phone still in her hand.
Hospital policy required another attempt to contact the emergency contact before surgery concluded.
She dialed.
The automated message returned instantly.
“The number you are trying to reach is currently switched off.”
Olivia sighed.
“Please answer…”
She left another voicemail.
“Mr. Carter, this is St. Mary’s Hospital. Your wife is in emergency surgery. Please contact us immediately.”
She hung up.
It was the sixth message.
None had been heard.
Across town…
The party had become louder.
Music echoed through the ballroom.
Guests gathered around Sophia, laughing as gifts were opened.
“You always throw the best birthdays,” one friend said.
Sophia smiled.
“I had help.”
She glanced toward Ethan.
He was pouring champagne into crystal glasses.
“You’ve barely looked at your phone all night,” another guest teased.
“My wife worries too much,” Ethan replied casually.
“If it’s important, they’ll call again tomorrow.”
The room laughed.
Only Sophia noticed the flicker of hesitation in his eyes.
“You sure everything’s okay?” she asked quietly.
He forced a smile.
“Tonight is about you.”
For reasons he couldn’t explain, the words felt heavier than they should have.
Back in the operating room…
“Incision.”
Dr. Morgan worked with calm precision.
“Suction.”
The bleeding was worse than the ultrasound had suggested.
“Placental abruption extending.”
A tense silence settled over the room.
Then—
“I’ve got Baby A.”
A tiny infant emerged.
No cry.
The neonatal team rushed forward.
“Come on…”
Seconds felt like hours.
Then—
A sharp cry pierced the room.
Everyone breathed again.
“Baby girl!”
Emma, unconscious beneath the drapes, never heard it.
“Baby B.”
Another delivery.
This one was frighteningly still.
“No respiratory effort.”
The neonatal specialists immediately began resuscitation.
“Come on, little one…”
One breath.
Two breaths.
Chest compressions no bigger than two fingertips.
Then—
A weak cry.
Growing louder.
“He’s breathing!”
Relief spread across the room.
But no one celebrated yet.
There was still one baby inside.
And Emma was bleeding faster.
“Blood pressure seventy over forty.”
“We’re losing too much blood.”
Dr. Morgan didn’t look up.
“Transfusion now.”
Units of blood arrived.
Every second mattered.
“Ready for Baby C.”
The final infant was delivered.
Silence.
No movement.
The room froze.
“Heart rate?”
“…Forty.”
The neonatal team sprang into action.
“Start CPR.”
Tiny compressions.
Ventilation.
Medication.
Again.
Again.
Again.
No sound.
Nurse Olivia felt tears sting her eyes.
“Come on, sweetheart…”
Another compression.
Another breath.
Then—
A tiny gasp.
Everyone stopped.
Another.
Then suddenly—
A loud, angry cry filled the operating room.
The loudest of all three.
Someone actually laughed.
Another wiped away tears.
“Triplet number three is alive.”
But across the surgical drapes…
Emma wasn’t improving.
“Doctor…”
The anesthesiologist looked at the monitor.
“She’s still bleeding.”
Dr. Morgan’s expression hardened.
“Uterine atony.”
He acted immediately.
“More medication.”
Nothing.
“Massage.”
Still bleeding.
The suction canister continued filling.
One liter.
Then two.
The room grew tense again.
“We’re running out of options.”
At the Grand Aurora Hotel…
The photographer gathered everyone together.
“One more picture!”
Sophia stood beside Ethan.
“Closer,” the photographer smiled.
“You two look like you never stopped being best friends.”
Sophia slipped her arm gently around Ethan’s.
Flash.
Another photo captured forever.
At that exact moment…
Seven missed calls sat unseen on Ethan’s powered-off phone.
Along with one text from the hospital marked URGENT.
Back in surgery…
Dr. Morgan made a decision few hoped to face.
“If we can’t stop the hemorrhage…”
He paused.
“We may have to perform an emergency hysterectomy.”
The room fell silent.
It would save Emma’s life.
But it would mean she could never carry another child.
There was no husband to consult.
No family to ask.
Only the consent form Emma had signed herself.
“Do whatever it takes to save me… save my babies.”
Dr. Morgan nodded.
“Prepare.”
Just then—
The bleeding began to slow.
A nurse looked up.
“It’s responding.”
Another glance.
Blood pressure…
Rising.
Eighty-five.
Ninety-two.
One hundred.
A collective breath escaped the room.
Dr. Morgan closed his eyes for one brief moment.
“She’s coming back.”
The danger wasn’t over.
But hope had returned.
Hours later…
Three tiny incubators stood side by side in the neonatal intensive care unit.
One little girl.
Two little boys.
All alive.
All fighting.
Emma was transferred to recovery, pale but stable.
Nurse Olivia gently placed photographs of the three babies beside Emma’s bed.
“So the first thing she sees,” she whispered, “is what she fought so hard for.”
Emma remained asleep.
Her hand rested inches from the photos.
Still wearing her wedding ring.
Still waiting for the husband who had no idea he had almost lost everything.
And as dawn broke over the city, Ethan’s phone remained dark in the pocket of his suit jacket.
When he finally turned it back on…
The first notification would change his life forever.
End of Part 2.
